Humans of Our Planet: Dr. Alan Stern

Are you curious about the secrets of Pluto and the outer solar system?

Then check out this HOOP (Humans of Our Planet), Space for Humanity’s monthly Instagram Live series, where we talk with amazing people who are making a difference in our world and beyond.

This month, our special guest is Dr. Alan Stern, a renowned NASA scientist and the principal investigator of the New Horizons mission, which flew by Pluto in 2015 and Arrokoth in 2019. He is also World View's founder and chief scientist.

On November 2, 2023, Dr. Stern flew aboard the Virgin Galactic commercial spaceship VSS Unity as part of Galactic 05. The purpose of his flight was to test equipment monitoring his vital signs and use the Southwest Ultraviolet Imaging System (SWUIS), an innovative wide-field visible and ultraviolet imager, to evaluate the spacecraft’s suitability for astronomy observations.

Dr. Stern joins our Executive Director Rachel Lyons for a fascinating conversation about his passion for exploration, his experience on VSS Unity, and his vision for the future of humanity in space.
