SFH at AwesomeCon

Awesome Con is one of the East Coast’s largest fan conventions, an annual pop culture extravaganza celebrating geek culture (as well as all things science, technology, and space). This year, Space for Humanity hosted a booth, sharing our mission with approximately 60,000 con-goers and showing how ordinary people just like them have the opportunity to travel to space and experience the Overview Effect.

Board Member Sirisha Bandla participated in a panel exploring how sci-fi films and stories have influenced careers and shaped our technologies.

Friend of S4H, Dr. Sian “Leo” Proctor, also spent the weekend with us and, at one point, donned Ryan Gosling’s First Man spacesuit — becoming the first real astronaut to wear it — while walking the convention floor, where she crossed paths with a number of enthusiastic celebrities, including George Takei ("Star Trek"), Nathan Fillion ("Firefly"), and Adam Savage ("Tested," "MythBusters"), as well as regular con-goers surprised to meet a real astronaut!

Events like Awesome Con offer a unique opportunity to connect with passionate, mission-aligned audiences and share our message in a dynamic and engaging way. It may have been our first convention appearance, but it certainly won’t be our last.
