S4H at the Hollywood Climate Summit
Space for Humanity was in Los Angles this week for the Hollywood Climate Summit, hosted at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, uniting thousands of entertainment and media professionals taking action on climate change. Space for Humanity's Executive Director, Antonio Peronace, moderated a panel titled "The Overview Effect" with featured speakers Melissa Navia (Lt. Erica Ortegas, "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds"), Bill Wolkoff (Writer, "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds"), Garrett Reisman (NASA Astronaut, Ret.), and Manju Bangalore (Founder of Operation Period and a Virgin Galactic Astronaut-In-Training).
Per the session's description: "In 1968, astronauts shared the first picture of Earth from Space -- the awe-inspiring 'Earthrise' photo captured every living being, forest, and river all in one single photograph. Seeing the Earth from a new perspective, The Overview Effect, has the power to shift perspectives, deepening an understanding of the interconnectedness of our shared home. This image even inspired the modern environmental movement. Space for Humanity is leading the way in expanding the The Overview Effect to leaders across the globe.
For decades, media has predicted aspirational futures through space exploration, from the 'Star Trek' franchise to the 'Project Hail Mary' blockbuster. These visions of humanity offer something more than entertainment, they offer a blueprint for a world where we trade national perspective for global cooperation to work towards a more sustainable world. In this session, space storytellers and experts will explore how science and collaboration in storytelling can inspire public imagination and expand our ideas of what is possible here on Earth."
